Knowledge and Innovation Ecosystems

Lund University is currently active in the two “EIT KICS*”, EIT Food and EIT Culture and Creativity. The KIC for Climate has ended its 15 year period with EU funding but runs large mission projects such as Net Zero Cities in Europe. The network is still valuable and there are links with the Swedish strategic innovation programme Viable Cities. In 2025, Lund University is applying in a large consortium to form the upcoming KIC for Water.

Here you can find background information if you are new to the “KIC” concept and want to understand what oppportunities they bring to Lund University. We also show how these ecosystems are linked and how local, regional, national and international initiatives can be supported and grow. Since 2023, Lund University is the host of the Innovation Policy Platform for Cultural and Creative Industries, called ekip. It provides new insights, experiences and networks throughout Europe, of importance for the green and digital transition.

EIT KIC – the consortia of universites, research institutes, large companies and organisations, cities or other public sector agencies that together form the partnership for a community that shares and develops knowledge and innovation activities over a 15-year period of EU funding. This is why the are called KICs – Knowledge and Innovation Communities.

The various KICs are organised in slightly different ways but they need to follow some common structure and report to the main body, the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, EIT.
The KICs develop Entrepreneurial education, Innovation driven research, Business creation and provide opportunities and funding to its stakeholders and wider ecosystem.
